We offer an extended day program for children between the ages of two and five where they are able to get speech-language services and occupational services. In this program, we are offering small group learning with a licensed early education teacher as well as licensed OTs and SLPs who are in the classroom.
Today, I want to talk to you about this extended therapy option that we offer at Dynamic Therapy Specialists.
How Our Extended Therapy Model Works
When a child is receiving individual services, they are likely getting 30 to 45 minutes of individual time per day. In our extended therapy program, which we refer to as Dynamic Days, children are receiving targeted intervention all day from the beginning to the end.
Our OTs are joining in to provide targeted interventions during snack time, potty-training time, and while facilitating motor development on the equipment when they’re outside. Our SLPs are facilitating the use of alternative and augmentative communication (or AAC) while facilitating peer interactions.
We are targeting individual goals throughout the entire day versus a 30-minute, one-on-one intervention that a child might receive either at their school program or at our clinic in the afternoons.
Our Program Focuses on Readiness for Learning
Dynamic Days is better equipped to meet each child’s needs where they are and provide opportunities for learning. And although there is an academic backdrop, there is a bigger focus on readiness for learning.
We prepare children for kindergarten by using movement, the expertise of occupational therapists in emotional regulation and motor development, and the skills of speech-language pathologists in early communication, social communication, and peer interactions. We take the backdrop of preschool (which is snacks, outdoor time, circle time, and themed learning) and incorporate it into our extended therapy model.
How Dynamic Days Avoids Common Preschool Challenges
A child is more likely to struggle in a traditional classroom, which is going to have more structure and more of a focus on traditional academic goals. But we’re able to have more flexibility to support where each child is individually, so we don’t see those types of challenges.
We’re able to prepare each child before we go in and sit down for circle time. We’re able to use movement, for instance, so that children are better able to focus and attend. We are able to incorporate the knowledge of all of the various specialists on our Dynamic Days team to optimally provide opportunities for growth and development for children between the ages of two and five.
