I want to talk about something that gets overlooked a lot: spelling. A lot of people think spelling is just about memorizing words for a spelling test. But it’s so much more important than that.
Spelling is actually a window into reading. When a child spells a word, they’re showing us exactly their understanding of how language works.
Why Spelling Matters for Readers
When we teach spelling—not as a memorization task, but as a way to understand patterns and how words work—we’re actually strengthening reading at the same time.
Think about it: when a child learns that the /ch/ sound can be spelled ‘ch,’ ‘tch,’ or ‘ch,’ they’re learning patterns. Those same patterns help them when they’re reading a new word they’ve never seen before.
Traditional approaches often separate reading and spelling. They teach reading first, and spelling if there’s time. But at Dynamic Therapy Specialists, we weave them together. They strengthen each other. And kids end up with a deeper, more flexible understanding of words, robust vocabulary, and ultimately improved written expression skills as a bonus.
So when we work with your child, we’re not just focusing on reading. We’re using spelling as a powerful tool to build literacy as a whole.
That’s why we integrate reading, spelling, and writing in our work.
